Lefkada Town
The island's capital in the north: evening buzz, restaurants and culture, right by the causeway.
Lefkada Town is the first thing you reach once you cross the causeway, and it is the island's living heart. The pedestrian streets and the marina come alive in the evening, with a good choice of bars, tavernas and shops, and in high season the buzz runs late. It is also the most convenient base if you would rather not rely too much on a car: it sits a few minutes from Preveza airport and close to the Agia Mavra fortress, the Faneromeni monastery and the small museums. There is no real beach in town, but the long sand and shingle strip of Gyra and Agios Ioannis is just minutes away, and buses to many coastal beaches leave from here.
Why you'll like it
- Everything within reach (shops, restaurants, banks, pharmacies)
- The liveliest area after dark
- Well connected: airport nearby and buses to the beaches
- Great for short stays and for those not renting a car
Keep in mind
- No beach in town itself
- Can be noisy in the evening near the marina
- Feels more like a working town than a seaside resort

Practical tips
On the hills just above town, suburbs like Apolpena offer cheaper stays with a view, a few minutes from the centre and well placed for touring the island.
Getting around
Very walkable; parking in the centre can be tricky in high season. You can manage without a car for a few days thanks to the buses, but you will want one to explore the island freely.
