Karya
The interior's mountain village: cool, authentic, among plane trees and tradition.
Karya is the largest and most authentic of the interior's mountain villages, gathered around a square shaded by great plane trees and known for its embroidery tradition. It is a different choice from the coastal resorts: here you stay cool even on the hottest midsummer days, you breathe village life, and you set off to explore vineyards and trails. From the centre both the east and west coasts are relatively easy to reach, while staying away from the crowds. It is the ideal base for those who want the island's green, traditional side more than the beach every day.

- Cool even at the height of summer
- Authentic and quiet, away from the crowds
- Good for hikes, vineyards and village life
- Central position for reaching both coasts
Keep in mind
- Far from the sea, inconvenient if you want the beach every day
- A car is essential
- Little evening life and few tourist services

Getting around
A car is essential: the interior is not well served by public transport and every beach involves a drive.
